The users may find it hard to understand abstract theories and may simply be bored when the site is cluttered or difficult to navigate.

Therefore, I am going to incorporate the User Experience Research and Design (UXD) that I have learnt in my classes as well as based on my research in all phases of my project. The integration of UXD techniques at the initial stage will enable me to make sure that the site will be not only informative but also accessible, inclusive, and easy to navigate. The principles of UX presented in the works by Norman (2013) and Krug (2014) are used to inform my approach, i.e., the emphasis on the intuitive design and minimization of the cognitive load, respectively.

To assist in visualization of user needs and user behaviors, I have developed UX materials, including personas, empathy maps, and journey maps. Through this type of planning, I will produce a project that will not only exhibit good UX practice but also convey knowledge about the psychology of design itself.

Project Goals & UX Objectives

My project is aimed at creating a site that gives the design psychology concepts in a clear and attracting manner. Most psychological concepts may seem dense or abstract when addressed to an academic audience, thus my challenge lies in ensuring that they are made available, and practical to users who might be as varied as design students to those still in early career as a designer.

From a UX perspective, my objectives are to:

Reduce cognitive load by organizing content clearly and breaking it into digestible sections (Krug, 2014).

Create a readable visual hierarchy using typography, spacing, and consistent layout (Norman, 2013).

Ensure the site is accessible and inclusive, following WCAG 2.2 guidelines (W3C, 2023).

Design a navigation structure that allows users to quickly find and explore content relevant to their interests.

The success will be measured with the help of the usability oriented results. An example is when the user is able to find a particular subject and interact with the content without getting lost, then this means that my UX goals are being achieved. These goals are only achieved through careful research, design, prototyping and testing.

Target Audience Considerations

Identifying and understanding target audience is central to designing an effective website. My primary audience includes:

Design students, who need clear explanations for learning and assignments.

Early-career designers, seeking practical applications of psychological principles.

Individuals interested in psychology or digital design, exploring the subject out of curiosity or self-learning.

The users are going to have various backgrounds and expectations. One might want brief summaries or illustrations whereas another might want extensive theoretical descriptions. I am also be aware of these differences and have created personas that depict the important types of users (Nielsen and Molich, 1990). These personalities will lead to the complexity of content, navigation, and visual presentation.

The accessibility and inclusivity are also imperative. I would like to apply clear typography, contrast, and simple navigation, which is indicated in WCAG 2.2 (W3C, 2023), so that everyone could feel comfortable with the site. This exercise of thinking about my target audience made me understand that the design choices should be made based on the limitations and behaviors of the users, and not only in ideal situations.

Proposed UX Research Approach

I plan to conduct UX research in two main phases: desk research and informal user research.

The desk research is the research on the principles of design psychology, user-centred design practices and accessibility standards. I will make a review of scholarly papers, UX books, and websites used in education to find effective approaches to the organization and presentation of content. The study of precedence will aid me in identifying trends that can be used in learning and usability and prevent pitfalls that can be associated with design (Krug, 2014; Norman, 2013).

Informal user research involves the interactions between oneself and fellow peers and potential users to learn how they interact with the content. These discussions expose the challenges and indicate the effective presentation styles. The research findings will be used to inform personas, empathy maps and journey maps to facilitate the visualization of user motivations and behaviors (Nielsen and Molich, 1990).

An example is where I noticed students like myself, would tend to skim the contents when they are faced with time pressure. Having learned this, I will make my articles organized into headings, bullet points, and highlighted key takeaways to enable scanning and also to ensure that they can be explored further.

UX Design Tools & Materials

To translate my research into practical design decisions, I have create several UX materials:

User Personas

I have drafted two key personas:

Student Sam: a 22 year-old design student who needs clear explanations for assignments. Sam prefers short sections with examples and visuals, and may lose focus if content is dense.

Designer Dana: a 28-year-old early-career designer seeking practical takeaways. Dana scans headings, looks for actionable insights, and compares multiple sources for credibility.

User Persona of a early-career designer Dana Marina

User Persona of a design student Sam Lerners

Creating these personas has helped me consider different user needs and reading behaviors, guiding choices about content length, examples, and navigation structure.

Empathy Maps

In the case of each persona, I developed empathy maps to find out what the users think, feel, say, and do. I will observe behavior, note points of confusion, and request feedback on clarity, readability, and navigation. Feedback will be documented and used to iterate the design before final development (Nielsen & Molich, 1990).

Iteration & Reflection

UXD is inherently iterative. I expect to refine design based on testing insights. For example, if users struggle to scan articles, I may adjust headings, spacing, or highlight key takeaways differently. Iteration allows continual improvement, ensuring the website meets both educational goals and UX objectives (Krug, 2014).

Ethical Considerations

I will ensure that all testing follows ethical principles:

Participants will be informed about the purpose of testing and their role.

No personal data will be collected or stored.

Feedback will be anonymized and used solely to improve the project.

By respecting user privacy and providing clear guidance, I aim to maintain trust and responsibility throughout the UX process.

Conclusion

This planning document describes my method for including UX Research and Design in building my Design Psychology website. I will use personas, empathy maps, journey maps, and iterative testing. My goal is to create a site that is educational, accessible, and focused on the user.

Reflecting on UXD during the planning stage has changed my thinking. It has helped me anticipate challenges, prioritize clear content, and design interactions that support learning. Going forward, I will keep testing and improving the website. My goal is to ensure that it clearly communicates design psychology principles while also providing a smooth and engaging user experience.

References

Norman, D.
